Working as a UniCert auditor
Certification is only as good as the people who carry out the audits. We look for auditors and technical reviewers who combine sector experience with a strong grasp of ISO requirements and impartiality.
What we look for
Typical requirements for lead auditor roles include:
- A recognised lead auditor course for the relevant standard (for example ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 or ISO/IEC 27001).
- Working knowledge of ISO 19011 auditing principles and ISO/IEC 17021-1 competence requirements.
- Hands-on experience in at least one technical sector (IAF code), such as construction, manufacturing, food, IT or healthcare.
- Clear written English for audit reports, and the ability to travel to client sites.
How we support our auditors
Auditors are witnessed and monitored in line with accreditation requirements, and they get regular calibration on standard revisions. This includes the 2026 editions of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 19011.

Frequently asked questions
Do you hire freelance auditors?
Yes. Many of our auditors work on a subcontract basis, as long as they meet our competence and impartiality requirements.
Can I audit clients I previously consulted for?
No. Under ISO/IEC 17021-1, you cannot audit an organisation you have provided consultancy to within the last two years.
