ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management. It replaced OHSAS 18001 in 2018 and is now the global benchmark for workplace safety certification — required by UK construction frameworks, manufacturing supply chains and public-sector procurement across multiple sectors.
Why UK businesses pursue ISO 45001
- Construction and engineering framework requirements — CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor and SSIP
- Supply chain qualification with Tier 1 contractors and large manufacturers
- Replacement for withdrawn OHSAS 18001 (withdrawn September 2021)
ISO 45001 vs OHSAS 18001
OHSAS 18001 was withdrawn in September 2021 and is no longer a valid certification standard. ISO 45001 is its direct replacement, with a broader scope that includes worker participation, the organisation's external context and integration with other management system standards. UniCert can assess your existing system and provide a transition audit pathway.
